Almond Butter Energy Balls

February 17, 2020 by Amber 10 Comments

Almond Butter Energy Balls are a great pre or post workout snack made with oats, flax seeds, almond butter, mini chocolate chips, honey and vanilla protein powder. My kids also enjoy these for an after school snack.

It’s that time of year to really kick that workout schedule into high gear to get that summer body ready for a swimsuit. This means, more protein is needed in the diet and less carbs. Energy balls are such a great way to get in a little extra protein everyday while staying satisfied between meals to help overcome the extra hunger. Not that you have to be on a workout schedule to eat energy balls, these can be consumed anytime for a snack between meals… maybe running out the door in the morning or to eat on the way home from work to keep you from getting too hangry.

Almond Butter Energy Balls

Almond Butter Energy Balls have great texture with the flax seeds and oats while the almond butter adds in that creaminess and binds everything together. Honey and chocolate chips are used as a nice sweetener. Protein powder is also inside these energy balls for extra protein and flavor! Each ball has 5- 6 grams of protein per ball so you can base your “serving size” off how much protein you need in your diet depending on age, weight and workout routine. The average person needs around 50 grams of protein daily. A person trying to build muscle and bulk will need more.

Almond Butter

Almond butter is a fantastic source of protein with 56 grams per 1 cup serving. Almond butter also supplies healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.

Old Fashioned Oats

Oats offer a little protein but mostly supply some fiber, minerals and vitamins.

Flax Seed

Flax seed may have a surprising amount of protein with 30 grams per 1 cup serving which equals to about 1 gram per energy ball. This ingredient also have Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.

Protein Powder

One scoop of protein powder can add a gram of protein per energy ball but this can amount can really differ depending on the type of protein powder being used. I do recommend going with the protein powder you enjoy that has great taste over getting the brand with the highest protein because you want this snack to be enjoyable!

Honey

This snack needs a sweetener and honey is the best way to add sweetness while also being a healthy choice. Honey is known to boost the immune system. I recommend buying an organic, local brand.

Chocolate Chips

Some mini chocolate chips add that little extra sweetness and can help curb chocolate cravings in just a small dose.
