Copycat KFC Bowl

January 8, 2021 by Amber 3 Comments

Copycat KFC Bowl can easily be made at home with mashed potatoes, gravy, popcorn chicken, corn and some shredded cheese.

A great comfort recipe the whole family will love that is so incredibly easy!

KFC has had these “Famous Bowls” on their menu for awhile now and it has been my go-to menu choice since their release. Actually, I think these bowls may be the only reason I have eaten at a KFC the past few years. Not because I don’t like KFC but my family just doesn’t eat out very often. We much prefer to make food at home so of course, I had to create my version of these crave-worthy bowls.

My fellow potato lovers may also enjoy this Shepherds Pie with Beer Gravy!

Copycat KFC Bowl

Copycat KFC Bowl has a base of buttery mashed potatoes, a layer of delicious turkey gravy followed by some sweet corn topped with crunchy popcorn chicken and shredded cheddar cheese. Comfort in a bowl! Let’s break down each ingredient.

Potatoes

Homemade potatoes are amazing and yes, you can make your own for this recipe. However, I typically just buy refrigerated potatoes from Aldi and heat them up in the microwave to keep life simple on busy school nights.

You may love these Homemade Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes.

Gravy

I used a turkey gravy packet for today but use what you love. If you like it homemade, go for it. If you like brown gravy, gravy from leftovers, mushroom gravy…  you can swap the gravy for whatever you please.  Sometimes, I like to use a country gravy.

Corn

Look for a can of whole kernel sweet corn. Frozen can be used if you prefer or even grilled corn on the cob would be tasty. I like using the can in this particular recipe because, again, it is all about the simplicity and getting a comfort meal on the table quickly during busy times.

Cheese

I always have a bag of cheddar shredded cheese in the refrigerator (one of my kids will put cheese on anything and everything) so that is what I used today. You can however use whatever you like in shredded form. A mild cheddar, extra sharp, monterey jack… taco blend.

Popcorn Chicken

Popcorn chicken works perfectly in these KFC Bowls. I buy the Aldi Kirkwood brand but any brand will do. You just want to look for a simple breaded chicken in bite-sized pieces.

Description

Copycat KFC Bowl can easily be made at home with mashed potatoes, gravy, popcorn chicken, corn and some shredded cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound popcorn chicken, frozen (I like Aldi’s)
  • 1 pound mashed potatoes ( Bob Evans is good. Found in the refrigerator section.)
  • 15 ounce can whole sweet corn
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • .87 ounce envelope turkey gravy mix
  • 1 cup water
  • ground pepper
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Cook chicken according to package instructions. Ali’s Kirkwood Popcorn Chicken: 450 degrees for 12 minutes in the oven.
  2. Cook potatoes according to package instructions. Bob Evans : heat in microwave for 3 minutes, stir and cook another 2 minutes.
  3. Heat corn in microwave in a microwavable safe container for 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. May instead heat on stovetop if you prefer.
  4. Make the gravy on the stovetop according to envelope instructions. Aldi : Whisk one cup water with gravy mix on a medium heat bringing to a boil. Remove from heat.
  5. Assemble bowls. Place 1/4 of the mashed potatoes into a bowl. Pour some gravy over top. Add corn, shredded cheese and popcorn chicken. Serve.

Notes

  • I will make 2 pounds of mashed potatoes instead of one when my family (the teenager) is really hungry!
  • More of an inspired by KFC than actual copycat recipe for a meal that is crazy simple.
