Cottage Pie

October 2, 2016 by Amber 14 Comments

We love Cottage Pie. Love, love, love it. Meat, creamy potatoes, veggies, and cheese. What isn’t there to love? Most people refer to Cottage Pie as a Shepherd’s Pie. My understanding is Shepherd’s Pie has lamb and Cottage Pie has some other meat, such as ground beef. You can easily swap out the ground beef in this recipe for a lamb if you would like a Shepherd’s Pie. Both are equally delicious! Today, we used corn and green beans as our vegetables. There are some other great vegetable swaps you can make such as peas and carrots or onion and mushrooms. This is a favorite dish of ours and a true comfort food.

Cottage Pie
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can corn
  • 1 can cut green beans
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1.5 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 pounds mashed potatoes
  1. Gather ingredients, pan, 2.5 quart casserole dish, foil, measuring cups and spoons, small bowl, whisk, and garlic press.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  3. On the stove top, brown 1 pound of ground beef.
  4. Add 3/4 cup of beef broth, 1.5 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, and mince 2 cloves of garlic and simmer 5 minutes.
  5. In the small bowl, add 1/4 cup beef broth and 2 tablespoons cornstarch and whisk. Add this mixture to the ground beef pan and mix continuously as that cornstarch thickens. Move quickly at this stage as it will only take a couple minutes to thicken.
  6. Turn heat off and the can of corn and can of green beans. Mix well and add to casserole dish spreading out evenly.
  7. Heat up 2 pounds of mashed potatoes. I like to prepare a large batch of homemade potatoes beforehand but you can also you microwaveable containers from the refrigerator section in the grocery store or prepare the mashed potatoes homemade before cooking your meat.
  8. Add a layer of mashed potatoes to your casserole dish.
  9. Add a layer of shredded cheese.
  10. Cover casserole dish with foil and bake 20 minutes on 400 degrees.
  11. Remove foil and let bake another 5 minutes or until the cheese on top is fully melted.
  12. Enjoy!

We love this for comfort food, but in our house we call it Shepherd’s Pie. 🙂

Definetly one of those dishes you pull out of the oven and all prep is cleaned up already and you can just serve the family and enjoy. So nice.

Yum! My grandma made Sheppard’s pie all the time when we were growing up. But she used peas, carrots, and corn. We never put cheese on it though! What a great addition! Can’t wait to try it out 🙂

I love shepherds pie, too but I always have made mine with beef. Didn’t know it was actually cottage pie!

I think the terms are interchangeable. My husband says shepherds pie, I say cottage pie because that’s what my mom always made. Tastes awesome regardless.
