French Dips

February 4, 2021 by Amber 7 Comments

French Dips are made with a chuck roast slow cooked in a crockpot with french onion soup, beef broth, red wine and rosemary and then placed on a sub with melty provolone cheese.

I grew up eating French Dips, I order them all the time when we go out to eat… I make them at home all the time. French Dips are one of those meals I don’t think I could ever get bored of eating. You really only need a few ingredients to make this hearty, mouth-watering dinner that the entire family will enjoy and ask for constantly!

French Dips

French Dips have so much flavor thanks to the french onion soup, red wine and a simple sprig of rosemary. The meat is tender and melts in your mouth, the au jus has a wonderful depth of flavor and helps moisten the sandwich, provolone cheese tastes delicious and also helps hold the sandwich together. Sandwich perfection! This is the type of sandwich you will find yourself CRAVING to eat over and over again. Good thing it is super easy to prepare!

Wine

Red wine adds such a richness to these French Dips! I typically will just grab whatever red wine I happen to have on hand.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are both wines that work well with beef so if you aren’t certain what to use, those are both great options.

Description

French Dips are made with a chuck roast slow cooked in a crockpot with french onion soup, beef broth, red wine and rosemary and then placed on a sub with melty provolone cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 can French onion soup
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 rosemary sprig
  • ground pepper
  • 3 pounds chuck roast
  • 12 provolone cheese slices
  • 6 sub sandwich buns
  • butter
  • chopped parsley, optional garnish

Instructions

  1. Place chuck roast into crockpot. Sprinkle over some ground pepper.
  2. Pour in beef broth, red wine and french onion soup.
  3. Top with a sprig of rosemary.
  4. Let cook on low for 10 hours or until the meat easily shreds.
  5. Remove meat from crockpot and shred.
  6. Use a ladle to spoon out the juices left in the crockpot and strain. This will be your au jus for dipping.
  7. Heat oven to a broil.
  8. Open up and butter the subs.
  9. Place buttered subs onto a baking sheet and broil for 2 minutes to get a little crisp.
  10. Remove buns from oven, pile on some shredded meat with a couple slices of cheese on the bottom halves of the subs.
  11. Place back into oven for a minute so the cheese can get melty.
  12. Remove from oven, garnish with parsley and put the top of the subs on sandwich.
  13. Serve with au jus for dipping.
