Homemade Grenadine

January 26, 2017 by Amber 14 Comments

Homemade Grenadine is made simply with just 3 ingredients of pomegranate juice, sugar and freshly squeezed lemon. Perfect for cocktails and mocktails!

Homemade Grenadine is way easier than you might think! Grenadine is commonly used in alcoholic drinks to add a little bit sweet, a little bit tart and a little bit of great color.  You may like some Roy Rogers for a fun family mocktail or spike a childhood favorite with some Dirty Shirley Temples.

What is grenadine?

My husband thought grenadine was a cherry flavored syrup and some of you may have thought the same. Grenadine is actually from pomegranate juice! And yes, every time I make grenadine my husband still questions if it is actually made with pomegranate and not cherry. Yes, yes it is. Add a little sugar to the juice on the stove top with lemon juice and bring to a simmer to make a simple syrup and you have a homemade grenadine. So easy!

Why make grenadine at home?

Why make it at home and not just purchase grenadine already bottled? To avoid preserves and red dyes! It is just a little healthier and tastes much better! You can even take this a step further and use freshly squeezed pomegranate juice. I have never taken on that venture so I don’t know how difficult it is to get the juice from pomegranate but give a try! Why not? The Pom Wonderful juice is 100% juice with no added dyes or preservatives so that is what I like to go with and what I recommend.

I’m wondering if it were frozen might it last longer? I’m thinking about pouring it into an ice cube tray…I also would like to use stevia vs. sugar; if it were frozen, you wouldn’t need the sugar to preserve it.

The sugar adds sweetness but you can give it a try and see what happens!

A couple months. If you see a change in color or appearance, toss it.

This sounds delicious. The only grenadine I’ve had is that super sweet maraschino cherry juice. I bet this would be amazing!

Well you just blew my mind. I too thought grenadine was from cherries! And had no idea it was so simple to make at home. Definitely going to try this!
